Waipipi Wind Farm

Overview

Located on the west coast of the Taranaki bite, the Waipipi Wind Farm project is situated across 4 privately-owned farms, and is spread across a land area of approximately 980ha. Regular farming activities continue in parallel to the wind farm’s operation, and as such, great care and attention had to be given to the land owners needs to ensure any potential impact due to construction was minimised. Environmental impact (pasture care due to being grown on reclaimed sand dunes), vehicle movements, noise and rubbish control were just some of the considerations that had to be managed daily, resulting in less than 2% of the site land being impacted due to construction overall. The wind farm generates a total output of 133MW and consists of 31 4.3MW DD Siemens Gamesa turbines. With a rotor height of 95m, at the time of installation, these were New Zealand tallest wind turbine generators.

This project highlights our ability to deliver a large scale project in the power generation industry, where milestones, high standards of repetitive workmanship and environmental management standards must be adhered to. This site was built on an old iron sand mine, which raised the need to manage both the health and safety and mechanical cleanliness issues that come when you mix wind and iron sand.

During this project we were also able of offer jobs to local Waverly residents. As the remainder of our staff were from out of area, we ensured that we accommodated them locally, thus putting thousands of dollars back into the local economy.

Percentage of work carried out by ISS: 70%
